Seismic and hydro-geophysical monitoring in the Jura mountains

Résumé

In 2018, the regional seismic network JURAQUAKE has been deployed in eastern France, in addition to the RESIF-EPOS network. The objective is to better characterize the local microseismicity affecting the northern part of the Jura arc (Larroque et al., 2021) and investigate the potential role of fluids in triggering earthquakes in this faulted and karstified region. Actually, three seismic stations have been installed on a karst aquifer and coupled to an existing hydrogeological observatory (JURASSIC KARST - SNO KARST), allowing to monitor water flow and sediment transport. In addition, 500 m of fiber optic cable has been placed along the underground karstic conduit in order to investigate hydrogeological recharge and transfer processes into the system. A very-high resolution 3D scan of the cavity was also acquired with a long-range Zeb-REVO to document the geological structures. Such multidisciplinary approach is relevant to better understand the functioning of the aquifer, as well as the spatio-temporal variations that occur along the karstic network.
